Still Waters is a custom lakefront estate on Lake Sunapee in New Hampshire, built by McGray and Nichols. Cedar siding, heavy timber beam ceilings, deep overhanging eaves, and an indoor lap pool with a full glass wall facing the lake. The materials are doing real work here, not just finishing the building.

The home sits within a stand of mature pines that pull the lake into frame from nearly every room. Inside, the great room is anchored by an exposed timber ceiling and a stone fireplace. The indoor pool is uncommon for residential construction in New Hampshire and the glass wall makes clear why it was worth doing.

Lake Sunapee earns its light. The surrounding hills hold the sun back until it arrives low and directional, turning cedar and water into something worth waiting for. You don't schedule that kind of light. You just have to be there when it shows up.
